As SSD arises in popularity as arguably the best data storage hardware for the moment, its usage has been spread not only in the professional field, but also the more casual ones, like gaming, though, with the pro gaming scene getting bigger now, and game spec requirements getting higher and higher, gaming may not be considered as ‘casual’ at all anymore. Okay, the topic of our discussion today is about Samsung 950 Pro and Samsung 850 Pro. Both SSD models have been widely used for various purposes. However, a lot of new buyers are left confused whether they should get the more affordable Samsung 850 Pro, or spend some more on Samsung 950 Pro for the best performance.
Well, Samsung 950 Pro is considerably more expensive than Samsung 850 Pro. Comparing the 512 GB variants of the two models, Samsung 950 Pro is higher than Samsung 850 Pro by about ninety bucks, more or less. Even so, one may frown when seeing the available variants of Samsung 950 Pro and Samsung 850 Pro. As the seemingly higher model, Samsung 950 Pro is very limited in capacity choices, only available in 256 GB and 512 GB. Samsung 850 Pro, on the other hand, can be acquired in 128 GB, 256 GB, 512 GB, 1 TB, and 2 TB.
Both models are also utilizing Samsung’s innovative V-NAND technology. Like other manufacturers, Samsung designed their own architecture in their SSD products. Samsung 950 Pro’s and Samsung 850 Pro’s flash memory is constructed of the 3D V-NAND architecture that stacks 32 cell layers on top of each other, resulting in higher density, better performance, and smaller physicality compared to most SSD models on the market. Also, both models are already armed with safety and data protection measure, as the manufacturer has implemented AES 256-bit data encryption in both models. Hence, with such self-encrypting devices, you can worry less about unauthorized people accessing your sensitive data. Take a look: Samsung 850 EVO Vs PRO.
So, what makes Samsung 950 Pro worth the price?
The speed. Samsung 950 Pro is much, much, much faster than Samsung 850 Pro, which is already pretty fast. For comparison, Samsung 850 Pro has sequential read speed and write speed of 550 MB/s and 520 Mb/s, respectively, while its random read and write IOPS are up to 100k and 90k. Samsung 950 Pro, with a sophisticated design, can achieve sequential read and write speed of 2,500 MB/s and 1,500 MB/s, and random read and write IOPS up to 300k and 110k. Huge.
