Samsung has been making the entry to consumer market by their 490 that was sold to both OEMS and consumers alike. The enterprise version of this model enables AES-256 but, the same feature may not available for the consumer model.

Samsung 830 was released and available in 4 capacities and each one of them have 3 different versions; the bare drive, desktop installation kit, and laptop installation kit. However, it may be hard to reach all of them in present day. Among all of them, the bare drive is undoubtedly the cheaper while the laptop kit will give you Norton Ghost + a SATA to USB cable and the desktop kit will include Norton Ghost + a 2.5” to 3.5” adapter with SATA cable.

Samsung 840 is released only around a year after the 830 model. This drive is a proof that the company constantly upgrading their SSDs to follow the market demands on more affordable yet better in performance Solid State Drive. Today, there are many SSDs out there that utilize TLC but if we take back several years earlier, it is still rare since most still used MLC. What’s make this drive interesting is it is the first drive in consumer market that utilizes 3-bit-per-cell MLC NAND or TLC. In present day, MLC vs TLC may not a common thing to discuss any more for how much the NAND improve for the past years but it was not the case back then.

Since TLC is still new in consumer SSD, the P/E cycle is said to be far lower to those MLC, so many people are concern about the life of these drives with TLC. If compared to the older 830, it is still can be seen as a healthy upgrade even though the sequential write speed is lower, it can be compensated by the faster random read and write speed.

The Samsung 840 is faster from most previous generation MLC NAND based SSDs shows that the company has designed some good controller and firmware. The drive was available from 120GB to 500GB and in present day the price start at $74.99 for the 120GB capacity, which makes it down to 62 cents per GB. Samsung also provide 3 years limited warranty for this drive.

Comparison
Now, let’s compare Samsung 830 with 840. Both of them are good SSDs and what mainly separates them is the NAND types used since 830 has MLC NAND while 840 has TLC NAND. From the performance, 840 is also better in random write and read while lower in sequential write. There should be an upgrade on firmware and controller too to make it able perform this good.
