HGST Deskstar NAS Vs WD Red

A network-attached storage (NAS) is a computer data storage made connected to a computer network in order to provide data access to a heterogeneous group of clients. Because it connects directly to a network, it should have specialized settings either in its hardware, software, or configuration, to be able to perform well. If you are seeking a decent NAS hard disk drive with a reasonable price, then you are most likely considering to take either HGST Deskstar NAS or WD Red (if you are still confused by the different WD models, take a look at a comparison article of WD Red and WD Purple). HGST Deskstar NAS is a little bit more expensive than WD Red. So, which one is the better choice?

Capacity Choices
Either you are looking for a NAS hard disk drive for a home or office network, WD Red offers you a wide array of capacity choices. It is available from 1TB all the way to 8TB. On the other hand, if you want a storage with a capacity of 3TB, 4TB, 5TB, or 6TB, then HGST Deskstar NAS can still be a viable choice.

Both HGST Deskstar NAS and WD Red work with the SATA III interface, which is able to provide you with a data transfer rate of 6 Gbps. They each also has 64MB cache. However, HGST Deskstar NAS has a higher RPM than WD Red. HGST Deskstar NAS has 7200 RPM while WD Red only has 5400 RPM. As the effect, HGST Deskstar NAS can give you a faster data transfer speed than WD Red.

However, on the other hand, WD Red is considerably quieter and cooler when operating compared to HGST Deskstar NAS. You may consider this as a trade-off of speed with heat, noise, and energy consumption. Both models are armed with vibration protection so that you can use them with several other devices together in a network without compromising drive health and system performance.

Even though HGST Deskstar NAS looks better due to the higher potential speed, WD Red actually makes the most convenient way. WD Red consumes significantly less power and generates significantly lower heat and noise, besides being slightly cheaper. These are great beneficial factors that will make it more efficient in the long run. Its speed has also never been an issue for the users. Therefore, WD Red should become your choice!
