SanDisk X400 Vs Samsung 950 Pro

Samsung, Sandisk

The reason why some people prefer not to use a SATA-based SSD and choose a PCIe-based one is simply because PCIe is much faster than SATA. Even with the latest SATA III version, some high-end SSD models may still experience the bottleneck effect so that they can’t unfold their true capability. PCIe is able to perform data transfer at a much higher rate; so, SSDs running on this interface are generally more powerful. Now, you are apparently considering getting either SanDisk X400 or Samsung 950 Pro. Both manufacturers are big names on the industry. Nevertheless, Samsung 950 Pro is more expensive than SanDisk X400. Which model does hold the best value for the money?

Design
Both models have been designed with the M.2 form factor, so both are compact and portable. Actually, SanDisk X400 is also available (and perhaps more popular) in the 2.5” form factor with the SATA interface, but we are going to focus only on the M.2 PCIe model in this article to make it equivalent to Samsung 950 Pro. Well, even though both SanDisk X400 and Samsung 950 Pro are M.2 PCIe SSDs, we must be aware that they have different locking mechanisms. SanDisk X400 comes with two ‘holes’ on the interface, whilst Samsung 950 Pro only has a single ‘hole’. Thus, before you make a choice, would be a wise idea if you check the compatibility of these two models whether they can be installed on your computer or not. (Read also : SanDisk X400 Vs X300)

Capacity Choices
The next thing that you need to consider is how much capacity that you need. Usually, a larger capacity is almost always better because the extra space will allow you to save more data before you need more storage expansion, but you may have your own needs and preferences. SanDisk X400 is available in 128GB, 256GB, 512GB, and 1TB. On the other hand, Samsung 950 Pro is only available in 256GB and 512GB.

Performance
Also, equally, important, you should also consider the performance of these SSD devices – you want an M.2 PCIe SSD because you are looking for speed, don’t you? Lots of users have been satisfied with SanDisk X400. It is indeed much faster than HDDs and some SSDs. However, it is not very well-suited for heavy-duty use, as it may struggle to keep up on high heat levels. On the other hand, Samsung 950 Pro is much faster and more reliable. It boasts sequential read/write of 2500/1500 MBps and random read/write of 300k/100k IOPS. It is blazing fast, and it comes with the Dynamic Thermal Throttling Protection to prevent the risk of overheating.

Conclusion
The very first thing that you should consider is which model’s interface that is compatible with your computer. Other than that, Samsung 950 Pro is generally a much better choice, as it is much faster and more reliable.
