Patriot Torch SSD Review

Okay, so, SSD is starting to shove away the dominance of HDD for personal computers. SSD is much better than HDD in almost every single thing. It is a lot faster and more durable because it uses no moving parts, unlike HDD that relies on spinning optical plates. Instead, it saves data in NAND microchips. However, compared to most HDD products, SSD models are still quite expensive. Usually, you will need to spend a few hundred to get an SSD of good quality. However, Patriot tries to break the wall with Patriot Torch SSD, an ultimately affordable and budget-friendly product offering high performance.

Patriot Torch SSD Review

What is the secret behind the low price? Patriot Torch SSD uses a Phison S9 controller without DRAM buffer that is paired with ONFi 16 nm sync flash. These components are used to press down the cost, proven to be effective for the purpose, yet, as the effect, there is no surprise that the performance is not comparable to SSD products from the higher class. Still, we can’t simply dismiss Patriot Torch SSD because it is still much better than most HDDs. It is available in three capacity choices: 60 GB, 120 GB, and 240 GB. Each variant has each own maximum speed, but the best performance is evident in the 240 GB variant.

Using SATA III 6 Gb/s interface, that is also backward compatible to SATA II 3 Gb/s, Patriot Torch SSD 240 GB is able to reach sequential read and write speed of 555 MB/s and 535 MB/s, respectively. This is a huge thing, as the numbers are comparable to the more expensive SSD products. However, Patriot Torch SSD seems to struggle to maintain a consistency after a long period of non-stop usage, seemingly because of heat issues, which can be addressed a little by providing some sort of cooling mechanism. Nevertheless, its performance is better than average, according to the user benchmark.

Patriot Torch SSD does not provide built-in encryption system, which is understandable due to the low price and can be tweaked by installing an encryption program, if very needed, but it has been designed with advanced wear-leveling to extend its usage life. Another neat thing, it supports TRIM and has built-in garbage collection system already, ensuring the performance can live for some time. Patriot Torch SSD is compatible with many platforms, including Windows XP, Vista, 7, 8, 8.1, 10, Mac OS, and Linux.
